Family of Yanira Serrano Files Federal Lawsuit Against Deputy Trieu and San Mateo County

On September 9, the family of Yanira Serrano Garcia announced they filed a civil rights lawsuit against San Mateo County and San Mateo Sheriff's Deputy Menh Trieu in Federal District Court in San Francisco for the June 3 killing of Yanira at her home in Half Moon Bay. The complaint alleges Deputy Trieu shot and killed Yanira without reasonable cause, which is a violation of the Fourth Amendment's limits on police authority. "The fact of the matter is there was no reasonable basis to shoot her," said attorney Arnoldo Casiallas, who is representing the Serrano family in the lawsuit. The complaint also alleges the shooting was a result of negligence on the part of the San Mateo County Sheriff's office due to its insufficient training of Deputy Trieu, as well as the dispatchers who handled the 911 call. Yanira Serrano-Garcia Honored on the One Month Anniversary of Her Killing

On July 3, the family and friends of Yanira Serrano-Garcia held a rosary and candlelight vigil to honor the 18-year-old on the one-month anniversary of her death. The vigil took place outside of Yanira's home at the Moonridge housing complex in Half Moon Bay, which is where she was killed by San Mateo County Sheriff's deputy Menh Trieu on June 3. An announcement for the vigil read: "Thursday, July 3rd will mark one month since the heinous shooting of our sister, daughter and dear friend Yanira Serrano-Garcia. We miss Yanira and refuse to let her memory fade. We will remember her through our struggle for Justice and to have Deputy Menh indicted for criminal murder. Her death will not go unpunished!" Rosary and Vigil Held for Yanira Serrano-Garcia at Her Home in Half Moon Bay

On June 5, family members and friends gathered for a Rosary and Vigil for 18-year-old Yanira Serrano-Garcia, who was shot and killed by Menh Trieu, a Deputy with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, on June 3. About 100-150 people attended the Rosary and lined the street outside of her home, the location where Yanira was killed, at the Moonridge housing complex in Half Moon Bay. Yanira's brother, Tony Serrano (far left), supported by friends at the memorial outside of her home. Before the Rosary began, a private gathering was held inside the home. Her mother could be heard wailing in pain as she communicated to the group. Friends explained that her mother was there when Yanira was killed. She witnessed the entire process, which began when the family attempted to call paramedics or emergency personnel to help out with Yanira, who the family says has special needs. It was somehow determined during that phone call that Yanira was a danger and that sheriffs should arrive...
